Illustration of Ancient Runestone
“I ween that I hung on the windy tree,
Hung there for nights full nine;
With the spear I was wounded,
And offered I was to Oden myself to myself,
On the tree that none may ever know what root beneath it runs.”

-Henry Adams Bellows, translation of The Poetic Edda, 1936

Divination is a type of fortune telling which attempts to foresee the future. It entails the observation and interpretation of a variety of phenomena. Various forms of divination are employed by shamans, green witches, medicine men, cunning men, and wise women. Divination uses various divinatory tools such as crystal balls, pendulums, and rune stones and interprets these tools in order to foresee the future.

What are the Runes?
According to Norse mythology the runes were a system of writing that was discovered by the god Odin. Odin hung from the world tree Yggdrasil for nine days at which point he was gifted with the knowledge of the runes which he then shared with mankind. The runes are used as a form of divination. You cast the runes by drawing them one at a time at random then you interpret the individual symbols to find out about events in your past, present and future.

Types of Runes:
Although there are other types of runes that can be studied, such as the Anglo-Frisian runes and the Scandinavian runes, the set of runes described here are based on the Elder Futhark runes. The Elder Futhark runes are of Teutonic (Germanic) origin and were used throughout northern Europe since approximately 50 BC. This system of rune symbolism most likely derived from the Etruscan alphabet.

The word rune is derived from an Old Germanic word meaning a mystery or a secret thing. The name Futhark comes from the phonetic pronunciation of the first 6 letters of the runes (f, u, th, a, r, k). The elder Futhark is divided into 3 tiers of 8 runes for a total of 24 runes. The first set of 8 runes which is called Freya’s Aett is associated with the physical aspects of man. The second group of 8 runes which is called Hagal’s Aett is associated with the emotional aspects of man. The last group of 8 runes which is called Tyr’s Aett is associated with the mental aspects of man.

Runic Divination:
A common method of diving ones future using the runes is to draw three runes at random. The first rune symbolizes the past, the second rune symbolizes the present while the third rune symbolizes the future. The three runes can also be read together to give an overall picture of the events effecting the person whose fortune is being told. Any runes that are upside down have the meaning opposite their usual meaning. Or you may ask the runes a specific question and then draw a single rune stone and interpret its meaning to find out the answer to your question.
