BOOK REVIEW
Planet Earth; As You’ve Never Seen it Before. Written by Alastair Fothergill who is the series producer of the Planet Earth documentary. Hardcover, 312 pages, over 400 color photographs are shown throughout the book. Published by University of California Press, 2006.
This book is a companion publication to the Planet Earth documentary TV show. Although you can certainly enjoy this book without having watched the documentary, you will more than likely be tempted to see the series after viewing this book.
The book, like the series, is divided into 11 sections; the whole earth, the great plains, the great sands, fresh water, rainforests, frozen poles, the great forests, mountain heights, the underworld, shallow seas and open ocean depths. The series took 4 years to create and was filmed in over 200 locations all over the world.
For a review of the TV show see the article Discovery’s Channel Planet Earth. The TV show can be seen in re-runs on the Discovery Channel or purchased as a multi-part DVD.
MAKES A GREAT GIFT
I purchased the Planet Earth DVD series and companion book for my husband as a Christmas present. I purchased the HGTV version of the series as we planned to watch it on our new Hi-Def, wide screen TV that is in the family room. My mom, who rarely watches TV at home, really enjoyed watching the Planet Earth series. She was blown away by the photography - and she only has a tiny, old, TV set at home, so the HGTV was pretty cool.
I highly recommend viewing The Planet Earth book and TV series. Mother Earth is shown in all her glory and beauty.
Take care,
Lynn AKA Herb Witch
