I'm Back Home

My husband and I got back from Tucson, Arizonia at 1 AM in the morning. On Saturday we rode our bicycles 109 miles while riding in the 25th annual El Tour de Tucson. Tucson was cool. Cyclist Greg LeMond was the guest speaker for our Team in Training pasta party the night before the ride - pretty cool. Greg was the first American to ever win the Tour de France.
The winner of the El Tour de Tucson finished in 4 hours 10 minutes - 109 miles, 2 dry riverbed crossings, hills, wind, cactus - that's crazy insane riding!!! That was a new record time for El Tour.
Saw 4 bikers getting taken away by fire rescue and one guy was still lying on the side of the road (with a member of the bike patrol holding his head) waiting for the ambulance to come by when we rode by him - pretty scary. Nice scenery but the roads were in horrible shape - guess that desert heat just tears them up. And there was tons of debris to ride around - water bottles, cleat covers, mirrors, bike lights, even a few cycle computers -scattered all over the roads.
Overall 85% of the ride reminded me of riding in Clermont, Florida. Except with cactus and HUGE mountains in the background. So if you can ride Clermont/Mount Dora you could definately kick butt at the El Tour de Tucson. The other 15% of the ride was spent at the beginning and end of the ride getting in/out of downtown Tucson city traffic then riding parallel to the highway to finally get to the outskirts of town to do the rest of the ride in and around the base of all the mountains.
I can't believe I'm spending my birthday doing laundry. And I'm still getting over a cold - I could have really kicked ass on the ride if I could have breathed!! My husband and I got silver medals - only expecting to get bronze - yeah us!!!!
COOL BEANS!!!! I still can't believe we did it - seems like a dream, or nightmare!?!?!
